Illiberty 1997

This is one of several pieces I created as "electronic paintings"—in part, using a visual vocabulary similar to that of photo illustrations—for a class at UW-Madison. I intended to imply a connection, or perhaps a comparison, between varying types of revolutions. We seem to be in the midst of a technological revolution that may affect society as profoundly as the alphabet, or movable type, or democracy, for example—all of which are represented in this painting.

The title is the subject of a longer discussion: what happens when something revolutionary changes to something else over time?
